I’ve been selling AGV Lights for seven years now, and I’ve heard this exact question dozens of times: Can our lights even hold up out there? AGV Light

It’s not a casual concern. A few years back, we got a call from a plant that makes cement blocks. Their old AGVs kept breaking down because dust would clog up the light housings, and within a month, half their warning lights were dim or unresponsive. They’d tried every off-the-shelf light they could find, and none lasted more than a couple weeks in that fine, abrasive cement dust. That’s when I realized the dusty environment question isn’t just about “will the light work”—it’s about “will it keep working without constant maintenance, and won’t it become a safety hazard if it fails?”

Let’s start with the basics: Dusty environments don’t just coat lights in a thin film—they’re often abrasive, moisture-laden, or chemically reactive. Cement dust is sharp and dry; flour dust can be fine enough to seep through tiny gaps; mining dust sometimes mixes with water seepage to form a sludge that cakes on surfaces. For AGV Lights, which are usually mounted on the front, back, or sides of automated guided vehicles, two things matter most here: the light’s ingress protection (IP) rating, and the build quality of its housing and optics.

IP ratings are the standard for measuring how well a device resists dust and water. An IP65 rating, for example, means the device is completely dust-tight (no dust can enter the enclosure at all) and resistant to low-pressure water jets from any direction. For dusty environments, we almost never recommend anything lower than IP65—even IP66, which handles high-pressure water sprays, is a good upgrade if your dust might mix with moisture from cleaning or spills. Here’s the thing: A lot of cheap off-the-shelf lights say they’re “dustproof” but only hit IP54, which only prevents large dust particles from getting in. Fine dust, the kind that clogs filters and seeps into electronics, will slip through IP54 gaps within a few weeks. That’s why we engineer our AGV Lights to meet IP67 ratings in many models—meaning they’re dust-tight and even can be submerged in water for short periods, which is a huge buffer against dust and accidental spills.

But IP ratings are only part of the story. The optics and the internal components of the light have to be sealed properly too. We’ve seen IP65 lights fail in dusty environments because the lens was a cheap, thin plastic that got scratched by abrasive dust, or the wiring connections weren’t sealed, letting dust build up on the circuit board. For our AGV Lights, we use polycarbonate lenses that are impact-resistant and coated with an anti-abrasive hard coating—so when dust particles blow across the lens, they don’t scratch it, and the light’s brightness stays consistent. We also use silicone gaskets that seal every gap in the housing, not just around the lens, so even the smallest dust particles can’t get inside to damage the LED chips or the driver circuit. Those small, often overlooked details are why our lights work in dusty environments where others fail.

We tested this ourselves a couple years ago, right in our own shop. We set up a test chamber that blows fine, cement-grade dust nonstop into a small enclosure holding a competitor’s standard AGV Light and one of our own. After two weeks, the competitor’s light had a 30% drop in brightness, and their internal wiring was visibly coated with dust. Our light? It had less than a 2% brightness change, and when we took it apart a month later, there was almost no dust inside the housing. That test convinced us we weren’t just making a claim—we had data to back it up.

Of course, not all dusty environments are the same, and one size doesn’t fit all. If you’re working in a grain elevator, where dust is fine but not abrasive, IP65 is more than enough. If you’re in a steel mill, where dust is hot and corrosive, we recommend our stainless steel housing AGV Lights, which can handle both dust and occasional high heat. We even have a line of explosion-proof AGV Lights for environments where dust can become combustible—like grain processing or coal mining—where a spark from a poorly sealed light could cause a disaster. That’s a big part of why we work closely with customers: We don’t just sell a light off the shelf, we help them pick the right model for their specific dust and environment.

Another thing to consider is maintenance. In dusty environments, you don’t want to have to climb up on AGVs every week to wipe down lights. Our AGV Lights are designed to be self-cleaning almost. The sealed housing means dust doesn’t get inside, so the only thing you might need to do is wipe the exterior lens once every few months, not every few days. A lot of our customers say that since switching to our lights, their maintenance time for AGV lighting dropped by 70%—that’s a huge cost saving on top of better safety.

We’ve had customers come to us after dealing with downtime from failed lights. One mining company told us their downtime from lighting issues cost them $12,000 a week. After they installed our AGV Lights, that number dropped to less than $1,000 a week. That’s not a small difference. Safety is another angle: If an AGV’s light fails in a dusty environment, workers on the floor might not see the vehicle, leading to accidents. Our lights have high-brightness LEDs that are visible even through a thin layer of dust, and the consistent performance means you don’t have to worry about sudden, unexpected failures.

Now, I don’t want to sugarcoat it: No AGV Light is totally indestructible. If you’re operating in an environment with extremely large, sharp dust particles that are constantly hitting the light at high speeds (like a quarry where rocks are being moved around), you might want to add a small, clear plastic shield to the exterior, which we can provide as an optional accessory. But even in those cases, our lights hold up far better than any standard light you’ll find elsewhere.

The biggest misconception I see is that people think “dustproof” is a one-size-fits-all term. A lot of brands will slap a “dustproof” label on a light that only meets IP54, and then wonder why it fails in their facility. That’s why we’re transparent with our customers: We’ll tell you exactly what our lights are rated for, and what kind of environments they work best in, no upselling. We’d rather you pick the right light for your needs than sell you something that doesn’t work.

At the end of the day, the question of whether AGV Light can be used in a dusty environment comes down to quality, engineering, and matching the right product to the right job. It’s not just about the IP rating—it’s about the gaskets, the lens coating, the internal components, and the way the light is built to stand up to whatever dust your facility throws at it. For the past seven years, we’ve built our business on making lights that work in the hard environments no one else wants to service, and the dusty ones are some of our most common and most successful applications.

If you’re dealing with AGV lighting in a dusty environment, and you’re tired of lights that fail too soon, require too much maintenance, or turn into a safety risk, I’d love to talk through your specific needs. We can walk through your facility, talk about the dust type, the operating conditions, and find the right AGV Light that will work reliably for you.

Forklift Handle References

International Electrotechnical Commission.
