Reaction between Metal Oxides and Non – Metal Oxides
Another way is through the reaction between metal oxides and non – metal oxides. For instance, carbonic acid (H₂CO₃) can be formed when carbon dioxide (CO₂), a non – metal oxide, dissolves in water. The reaction is CO₂ + H₂O ⇌ H₂CO₃. This is actually a reversible reaction, and it’s what gives carbonated drinks their fizz and a slightly acidic taste.

Fermentation
Fermentation is a well – known biological process for acid production. Lactic acid (C₃H₆O₃) is produced by the fermentation of carbohydrates by lactic acid bacteria. For example, when you make yogurt, the bacteria in the milk ferment the lactose sugar to produce lactic acid. This lactic acid gives yogurt its tangy flavor and also helps to thicken it. The reaction is C₆H₁₂O₆ → 2C₃H₆O₃.
Acetic acid (CH₃COOH) is another acid produced by fermentation. It’s the main component of vinegar. Acetobacter bacteria convert ethanol (C₂H₅OH) into acetic acid. Phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) can be made from phosphate rocks. The phosphate rocks are treated with sulfuric acid. The general reaction is Ca₃(PO₄)₂ + 3H₂SO₄ → 3CaSO₄ + 2H₃PO₄. Phosphoric acid is used in the food industry (for example, to acidify soft drinks) and in the production of fertilizers.

Electrolysis is another method for acid production.
Perchloric Acid
Perchloric acid (HClO₄) can be produced by the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chlorate (NaClO₃). First, sodium chlorate is converted to sodium perchlorate (NaClO₄) through electrolysis. Then, the sodium perchlorate is reacted with hydrochloric acid to form perchloric acid. Perchloric acid is a very strong acid and is used in analytical chemistry and in the production of some explosives.
